What's the game plan for Black?

Initially, Black attains and consolidates e4
(3 ... f5, 4 ... fxe4, 5 ... d5, 6 ... dxe4, 8 ... Nf6).
The idea is to gain a superiority in the center.
He then responds to White's c6 assault by
menacing the kingside (7 ... Qg5, 9 ... Qxf4,
11 ... Qh4+, 12 ... Qh3), after which he contends
for the territory behind e4 (13 ... Be6, 14 ... O-O-O,
15 ... Bd6, 16 ... Rhe8).

What's the game plan for White?

White first vies for e4 (4 Nc3, 5 Nxe4) and
then assails c6 (7 Nxc6). The latter campaign
attempts to capitalize on a discovered check
(10 Ne5+). Next, he takes advantage of Black's
exposed Queen to gain some say in the center
(9 f4, 11 d4). Lastly, he tries to dominate
that focal region (13 Bc4, 14 Bg5, 15 O-O-O,
17 Bxf6).

1 e4

Opening up a diagonal for the Queen and f1 bishop, and,
attacking the d5 and f5 squares.

1 ... e5

Black copies White with the same idea in mind.

2 Nf3

Not merely bringing the knight nearer the
center of operations but also assailing Black's
e5 pawn. If possible, always develop with attack
so as to speed up mobilization and harass the
enemy.

2 ... Nc6

The knight comes out to protect the threatened pawn.

3 Bb5

Inaugurating the Ruy Lopez. White indirectly
attacks Black's e5 pawn by threatening to
remove its defender (Bxc6). Moreover, he
prepares for a rapid kingside castling and
dissuades the advancement of the d7 pawn
because of the prospective pin on the knight.

3 ... f5

Initiating the Schliemann Defense.
Black ignores the e5 threat in order to attack e4.
